Why they come back

A third of them say their mother used it.

I read 89 written reviews of the 21 oz powder, newest first. 29 say they have used it for years or decades, or that it was in the house when they were children. 38 name the exact surface. Not one names the maker, the formula, or a rival.

“COMET--YES I always have a can under my kitchen sink. My mother always used Comet so I learned from her. It is great for my white sinks and tub.”

“Still works great. I grew up using Comet for bathroom sinks and elsewhere since I was a child. (Several decades ago) it still works just as well as all those years ago.”

“been around a long time Even though this product does not have the punch and strength it had many years ago, it still does a good job.”

reviews say years, decades, or since childhood. 38 of 89 name the sink, tub or toilet. 17 mention price. None says it beats another brand. They say it is the one they have always had.

The honest counterweight

The habit is not a household-cleaner thing. It is a Comet thing. I read 88 reviews of a sister KIK brand in the pool aisle, Pool Essentials, the same way. Four mention years. Twenty seven mention price. Same maker, same shelf, and the reason to reach for it is cost and whether it was in stock.

And one Comet buyer, giving five stars, says the powder no longer has “the punch and strength it had many years ago”. One voice. The one voice a habit brand should go looking for.

The concept held in the customer’s mind
Under the sink

“Always under my sink” is the customer’s phrase, not mine, and it comes up again and again. What they are buying is not a better powder. Nobody claims that. They are buying the can that was there when they were a child, and keeping it there for the next one.

The proof is what is missing. In 89 reviews nobody mentions the formula, nobody names the maker, nobody compares it to anything. The thing that holds these people is not on your page. It is under their sink.

Why it is defensible

Nobody can buy their way into somebody’s childhood. Four generations on one can took seventy years and cannot be copied for any price.

Why it is at risk

It is also unmeasured and written on somebody else’s website. Whether the next household is forming the habit is the one number nobody at Comet can see. The next page is what has to be decided.
